Professional Tax Slab revised from 6000 to 12000 by Gujarat Government

The Finance Department of Gujarat vide a notification dated 8th April 2022 revises the slab of professional tax payable under the Gujarat State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1976. Global epidemic of Covid has adversely affected the economic activities of the people of Gujarat in the last two years. Under the circumstances, Government of Gujarat has announced this professional tax exemption as a measure to restart sluggish economic activities. Under the existing structure of the Profession Tax; salary or wage earners in receipt of up to Rs.6,000 were exempted from paying professional tax. This rate has been revised by Government of Gujarat saying that salary or wage up to Rs.12,000 shall be fully exempted from payment of Profession Tax . As per the notification-
- The revised professional tax slab shall be effective from 1st April 2022.
- Salary and Wages earners of the State Government , Central Government , Panchayats , Public Sector Undertakings of the State and the Central Government , and Grant – in – aids institutions, and all other Salary and Wages earners including private sector -whose monthly salaries or wages are up to 12,000, the professional tax liability will be zero.
- Salary and Wages earners of the State Government , Central Government , Panchayats , Public Sector Undertakings of the State and the Central Government , and Grant – in – aids institutions, and all other Salary and Wages earners including private sector – whose monthly salaries or wages are more than Rs.12,000; , the professional tax liability will be Rs.200 per month.
- Where any salary or wages are payable according to any period other than a month, the monthly salary for the purpose of professional tax shall be calculated on the basis of the actual amount of salary or wages paid or payable for asp; month.
- Where a person ceases to be a wages earner before the end of any month, his liability to pay the tax for that month shall be proportionately reduced.
